Brown is the new black: six pieces in chocolate

Chocolate brown is the dark neutral of the season. Six pieces to start with, from a bag to a dress.

Our verdict

If you replace one black piece this winter, replace it with chocolate brown. It does everything black does and looks warmer next to the face.

Every few years a colour challenges black as the default dark neutral. This year it is brown. TheDoubleF's colour report for autumn 2026 calls chocolate brown, or rich espresso, a defining colour of the season, seen on floor-length leather trench coats, structured outerwear and chunky knits, and recommends wearing it monochrome with mixed textures.1

Why brown works

Black is graphic; brown is soft. Both slim and both hide wear, but brown flatters more skin tones in daylight and looks less severe in an office. It also pairs better with the season's other colours: TheDoubleF suggests earthy greens and olive with it, and both cream and camel sit beautifully next to it.1

How to switch

Start where black usually lives: the bag, the boots, the knit. Those are the pieces you see every day, and changing them to brown changes your whole wardrobe without buying a new outfit. Keep black trousers and jeans; brown on top of black looks deliberate and modern.

Six pieces

1. The suede bag. Nanushka's Sandi Lock bag in dark brown suede is the piece we would buy first. Suede makes brown look richer than smooth leather does.

2. The ankle boot. Toteme's soft suede ankle boots in brown go with jeans, skirts and wide trousers.

3. The lace dress. Rouje's LISERON is a midi dress in chocolate lace. It brings together two trends at once, the brown and the dark romance of the season's lace.

4. The turtleneck. Colorful Standard's merino turtleneck in coffee brown is the cheapest way to try the colour, at €140.

5. The leather jacket. Toteme's grained leather jacket in dark brown is the investment: brown leather looks better with age than black.

6. The satchel. Rouje's POETE in brown suede, for those who prefer a softer, flap-front bag.

How to wear it all together

Monochrome brown works when the textures change: suede, knit, lace, leather. Avoid four smooth surfaces in the same shade, which flattens the look. And let one lighter piece in, cream or camel, near the face.

Change the bag and the boots to brown, and your whole wardrobe changes.

One warning

Brown and navy can look dull together in poor light. If you love navy, add something cream in between.
