One camel coat, three budgets
The camel coat is the most reliable piece in a winter wardrobe. Here is how to style it, and what to spend.

Buy the camel coat before any other coat this winter. Then style it three ways, because the outfit around it decides whether it looks rich or tired.
Outerwear is the centre of this season. The Mystylebox round-up of the autumn 2026 shows lists double-breasted coats, trench coats and capes as the pieces designers built their collections around.1 Among all those coats, camel is the one that carries over from year to year, which is exactly why it deserves the biggest share of a winter budget.
Camel works because it is a neutral that is not grey. It warms the face where black can drain it, it flatters denim, and it makes any knit under it look more expensive than it was. The risk is the opposite: styled with the wrong pieces, camel looks like a uniform.
Way one: the office
A camel coat over a black fine knit and black tailored trousers. Add a black loafer and nothing else. The contrast of camel and black is the oldest trick in classic dressing and still the sharpest. Keep the bag black too, so the coat is the only warm colour in the outfit.
Way two: the weekend
Over an ecru cable knit and blue jeans, with brown suede ankle boots. Here the coat softens: everything is in the same warm family, from cream to tobacco. This is tonal dressing, which the Mystylebox report also names as a key idea for the season.1 The look works because the textures change while the colours stay close.
Way three: the evening
Over a dark lace or slip dress, with knee boots. The camel coat is what makes a dinner dress practical in November. Wear the coat open and the belt loose; a tightly belted coat over a dress looks like you are on your way somewhere else.
Three budgets
The pieces below show the same idea at three levels. The Colorful Standard merino turtleneck is the budget way to build the outfit underneath, at €140. Nanushka's Alamo robe coat in camel sits in the middle. Toteme's Signature doublé coat is the investment: doublé means double-faced, a cloth finished on both sides so the coat usually needs no lining, which is why such coats fall softly and cost more.
What the money buys, in order: the weight of the fabric, how the shoulder is built, and how the coat hangs when it is open. A cheaper coat can look right on the hanger and lose its shape by February. If you can only spend once, spend on the coat and save on what goes under it.
What to avoid
Avoid camel with grey; the two neutrals cancel each other out. Avoid matching camel shoes and a camel bag at the same time. One echo of the coat is chic; three looks like a set.
Spend on the coat. Save on what goes under it.
