Party season: eight pieces that shine

Satin, glazed leather, velvet and crystal: eight pieces for December evenings, each with a price.

Our verdict

Shine works when there is only one source of it. Pick one shining piece per outfit and let everything else stay matte.

December is the month when even minimalists want something that catches the light. The runways prepared the way. Mystylebox lists elevated surfaces as a key trend of autumn 2026: embroidery, beads, feathers and engineered textures, with Mugler using metallic leather and lamé.1 Coveteur's report found an Art Deco mood, with dropped waists, shift dresses and intricate beading at Khaite and Chanel.2 Velvet is back too, at Armani, Alaïa and Ralph Lauren.1

Here are eight pieces that bring shine to an evening, each one meant to be the only shining thing you wear.

The eight

1. A satin trench. Toteme's draped satin trench in black is the most unexpected party piece of the season: a coat that is also the outfit. Wear it over black trousers and a black top.

2. Satin trousers. Toteme's fluid satin trousers in black. With a fine black knit, they are an evening outfit that takes one minute.

3. A patent evening bag. Toteme's cocktail naplack bag in black, glossy and small.

4. A glazed leather bag. Rouje's GALA in glazed black leather, for those who prefer a shoulder bag.

5. Glazed leather pumps. Rouje's BRERA pumps in bordeaux glazed leather add colour and shine at the same time.

6. Velvet loafers. Toteme's velvet loafers in black, the shoe that takes you from dinner to dancing without pain.

7. A crystal necklace. Toteme's crystal drop necklace, a single stone that catches light at the neck.

8. Gold earrings. Rouje's TOSCANE earrings in gold, for an outfit that needs light near the face.

One source of shine. Everything else matte.

How to combine them

Choose one from the list and build the outfit in matte black, navy or chocolate around it. A satin trench with a patent bag and crystal is too much; a satin trench with a plain black knit and flat loafers is perfect. The same goes for colour: if the shoes are bordeaux, the bag is black.

The dress question

You do not need a new dress for every party. A lace or slip dress from earlier in the season, worn with one piece from this list, is a new outfit. See our story on the lace dress worn three ways.
