The trench at three prices
From €225 to about €845: three real trench coats, and what the extra money buys.

The middle price is the smart buy for a trench. The cheapest is fine if you will wear it twice a month; the most expensive is worth it only if the trench is your everyday coat.
The trench is the coat that is never out and rarely news. This season it is part of a bigger story: Mystylebox lists trench coats with double-breasted and leather coats as the outerwear designers built their collections around.1 So if your trench is tired, this is a good year to replace it.
We compared three real trench coats at three prices. All three are on sale in their shops as we write, prices as listed on 7 October 2026. Toteme lists in Swedish kronor; we converted at the ECB reference rate of 6 October 2026, 11.2425 kronor to the euro.2
Under: Rouje Trench GERARD, €225
The lowest price of the three. Rouje's trench is the French, feminine version: it is the one to choose if you like a trench with a little personality and will wear it on dry autumn days rather than in heavy rain. At this price, check the fabric label in the shop before you buy; weight and coating are what you give up first.
Middle: Rouje Trench EZRA, €375
For €150 more you stay with the same brand and move up a level. This is the price at which a trench should have a proper storm flap, a belt that sits well and a fabric with some body. For most people this is the right buy: good enough to wear daily for several seasons, without the luxury premium.
Over: Toteme Signature trench khaki, €729
Toteme's version is the quiet luxury trench: a classic shape in khaki, cut to sit well open or closed. Toteme also sells a trench in hazel at €865. What the extra money buys is mostly cut and fabric: how the collar stands, how the back vent falls, how the coat moves when you walk.
Our verdict
If the trench is your everyday coat, buy the best you can. If it is one of three, the middle is enough.
The trench is worn more than almost any other coat between September and November and again in spring. Divide the price by the days you will wear it and the expensive one is often cheaper per wear than it looks. But the jump from middle to top is mostly finish, not function.
How to wear it this season
- Belted at the back, open at the front, over a black knit and jeans.
- Over a lace or slip dress in the evening, with knee boots.
- With a brooch on the lapel, if you agree with our verdict in story eight.
One coat from the crosswalk to the old town.
