The white shirt, three ways for winter
The white shirt is not a summer piece. Three ways to wear it in winter, at three prices.

In winter, the white shirt is a layer, not an outfit. Under a knit, under a blazer, under a dress: the collar and cuffs do all the work.
Most white shirts disappear in October and come back in May. That is a waste of the most useful piece in a wardrobe. In winter, the white shirt changes job: it becomes the layer that adds a clean line at the neck and wrists of everything else. This fits the season's layering: Mystylebox names layering and mixed textures among the main ideas of autumn 2026.1

Way one: under a knit
A white shirt under a crew-neck jumper, collar out, cuffs folded once over the sleeves. It is the oldest trick in winter dressing and still the smartest. The white collar lights up the face the way a dark knit alone cannot. Use a thin shirt so the knit does not bulge.
Way two: under a blazer, buttoned up
A white shirt buttoned to the top, no tie, under a black blazer. Add a brooch at the collar if you agree with our verdict in story eight. This is the sharpest version of the white shirt and works for men and women alike.
Way three: under a dress
A white shirt under a slip or pinafore dress, collar and sleeves showing. It turns an evening dress into a daytime outfit and adds warmth. This is also the gentlest way into the poetcore look from story five.
In winter, the collar and the cuffs do all the work.
Three prices
- Rouje's HARPER in white, €145. The French version, slightly softer in shape.
- Toteme's Signature cotton shirt in white, €210. The clean, classic cut.
- Toteme's cashmere shirt in white, €446. A shirt in cashmere: it works as a light knit and a shirt at once, the winter white shirt in its most luxurious form.
What to look for
- A collar that stands. A soft collar disappears under a knit.
- Cuffs long enough to fold back over a sleeve.
- Real white or off-white. Blue-white looks cold next to winter fabrics; off-white warms.
Care
Wash white shirts with whites only, never with darks, and dry them on a hanger. A shirt ironed while slightly damp looks crisper than one ironed dry.
