Velvet, from Tuesday to Saturday

Velvet is one of the clear returns of autumn 2026. Mystylebox lists a velvet revival in eveningwear and tailoring, at Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, Alaïa, Lanvin, Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham, Balenciaga and Givenchy.1 Velvet catches light softly instead of shining, which is why it feels rich without looking loud.

The classic way into velvet is a blazer. We prefer to start lower down. A velvet shoe can be worn every day of the week, it lasts longer than a velvet jacket, and it adds the same richness to a plain outfit. Here are three days with one pair of velvet shoes.

Tuesday: the office

Black velvet loafers with grey wool trousers and a fine black knit. Under a desk, the shoes look like ordinary loafers; when you walk, the velvet catches the light. It is the most discreet way to wear a party fabric at work. Add a camel coat for the commute.

Thursday: dinner after work

Swap the knit for a silk or satin top and keep the trousers. Velvet and satin are the classic evening pair: one absorbs light, the other reflects it. Toteme's fluid satin trousers in black work too, for a full evening look with no effort.

Care

Velvet crushes. Hang velvet clothes with space around them, never fold them, and steam rather than iron. Velvet shoes need a soft brush, used in one direction, and rain spray before their first outing.
