Winter coats: what you pay for at each price
Five real winter coats from €315 to about €2,313. What each step up in price actually buys.

Up to about €900 you pay for warmth and cut. Above that you pay for material and finish. Decide which one you need before you look at prices.
The winter coat is the most expensive piece most people buy each year, and the one where prices spread the furthest. We compared five real coats, as listed on 7 October 2026. Nanushka lists in pounds and Toteme in Swedish kronor; we converted at the ECB reference rate of 6 October 2026.1
The season pushes towards texture. Mystylebox reports a revival of fur texture, with shearling the most common choice, real or synthetic, across Fendi, Dior, Loewe, Hermès and others.2 Coveteur saw fur, pile, shearling and fringe at Bottega Veneta and shearling at Louis Vuitton.3
€315: Rouje Manteau GEDEON, navy
At this price you are buying a good shape and a classic colour. A navy coat at €315 is a sensible city coat for a mild winter. Check the composition in the shop: the share of wool decides how warm it is.
€395: Rouje Manteau FERNAND, grey check
The same price level, more personality. A check coat is the most useful pattern in winter because it hides wear and goes with plain black and grey underneath.
About €881: Toteme Relaxed coat, black, €902
The step from €400 to about €900 is the step in cut. A relaxed coat has to fall well open and closed, which needs a better cloth and better construction. This is the point at which most people get the best value.
About €1,031: Nanushka Socorro structured coat, anthracite, €1,049
A structured coat holds its own shape rather than following yours. Above €1,000 you are paying for that architecture.
About €2,313: Toteme Short silky shearling coat, ginger, €2,368
Shearling is skin with the wool still attached: warm, heavy, and expensive to make. This is the texture trend at its source, and the price reflects the material rather than the cut.
Up to about €900 you pay for warmth and cut. Above, for material.
Our verdict
For one coat to wear every day all winter, the sweet spot is the relaxed wool coat around €900: the cut lasts and the price is still sane. Below that, the Rouje coats are good city coats for milder winters. Above, buy shearling only if you love it and live somewhere truly cold.
How to choose
- Try it with your thickest knit. A winter coat must close over it.
- Raise your arms. If the coat pulls at the back, it is too narrow at the shoulder.
- Check the length against your most-worn shoes. Long coats with flat boots, shorter coats with anything.
Texture, check, dark romance: three outfits for the cold months.
